Out in northeastern Montana, just outside of Glasgow, the prairie still holds onto something that’s getting harder to find—wild upland bird hunting the way it was meant to be. At Hoover Outfitting, we guide hunters through this landscape every fall in pursuit of sharp-tailed grouse and Hungarian partridge, and we do it with one goal in mind: give you a wingshooting experience that’s as authentic and rewarding as the birds themselves.
This is big country—rolling grasslands, open draws, and native cover full of snowberries, buffalo berries, wheat stubble, and the kind of terrain that these birds have thrived in for generations. There are no pen-raised birds here. These are wild populations, born and raised in the Montana prairie, and hunting them means covering ground, trusting your dogs, and working for each flush the right way.
The season runs from September 1 through mid-October, and it’s one of the best times of the year to be in the field. The early season provides ideal weather and consistent bird movement. Coveys are often larger, more concentrated, and focused on feeding patterns. Our hunts are fully guided and walk-in, typically covering gentle to moderate terrain with two to three hunters per guide. It’s a style of hunting that encourages pace, patience, and teamwork with your dogs.
We welcome hunters to bring their own bird dogs, and many do. We provide secure kennel accommodations at the lodge and enjoy seeing dogs work the country they were bred for. Whether you’re running a young pointing dog or a seasoned veteran, this is the kind of ground that gives dogs honest work and teaches them how to handle birds that won’t give you many second chances.
If you’re not bringing your own dogs, you’ll hunt behind our experienced string. These dogs know the terrain, know the birds, and give clients excellent shot opportunities through steady, reliable work.
When the day’s hunting is done, the experience doesn’t stop at the tailgate. Our guests stay at a comfortable log lodge with space for up to five hunters. We keep the setting intimate, and that’s by design—fewer guests means more personalized attention, more relaxed evenings, and a better overall hunt. Meals are handled by our in-house culinary expert, ensuring you’re well-fed and ready to go again each morning.
Hunts are booked in 3-day, 4-night minimum packages, with a required 50% deposit to hold your spot. Group sizes are small, and dates fill quickly, especially as the word continues to spread about the kind of hunting we offer.
We’ve been guiding hunters in this region since 1997, and our family’s ties to this land go back much further. We don’t offer volume. We offer quality—fewer hunts, fewer guests, and more focus on delivering exactly what serious upland hunters are looking for: wild birds, great dog work, and a genuine Montana prairie experience.
This kind of wingshooting is getting harder to come by. But here, it’s still real—and we’re proud to guide it.
